Your Ortho Told You to See Lingua: Now What?

You just left your orthodontist’s office. You went in expecting to talk about brackets, wires, and maybe clear aligners. Instead, you walked out with a referral to the team at Lingua Speech, Swallow, and Voice Services.

If you're sitting in your car right now scratching your head and thinking, "Wait, why do I need to see an oral myofunctional therapy for my teeth?"—take a deep breath. You aren't alone, and it’s a lot more common than you might think!

Let’s break down exactly why your ortho sent you our way, and how we are about to become your smile's best friend.

The Muscle-Tooth Connection

Orthodontics is all about physics. Braces and aligners work by applying continuous, gentle pressure to your teeth to move them into the correct position. But guess what else applies continuous pressure to your teeth? Your tongue, your lips, and your cheeks.

Your tongue is an incredibly strong muscle. If it isn't resting in the right spot or moving correctly when you swallow, it can actually fight against the work your orthodontist is trying to do.

Here at Lingua, we specialize in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT). Think of it as physical therapy for the muscles of your mouth and face. We train your muscles to work with your braces, rather than against them. We have both licensed speech language pathologist and registered dental hygienist that are trained and experienced in oral myofunctional therapy .

4 Reasons Your Ortho Referred You

If your orthodontist sent you to our clinic, they likely spotted one of these sneaky culprits:

1. The "Tongue Thrust" (Reverse Swallow)

The average person swallows between 500 and 1,000 times a day. During a correct swallow, the tip of your tongue should push up against the roof of your mouth. If you have a tongue thrust, your tongue pushes forward against your front teeth instead. Over time, those thousands of little pushes act like a bulldozer, pushing your teeth outward and creating what’s known as an "open bite."

2. Incorrect Resting Posture

Where is your tongue right now while you read this? Ideally, it should be resting gently against the roof of your mouth, with your lips sealed and your teeth slightly apart. If your tongue rests low in your mouth or presses against your bottom or top teeth, it can alter the shape of your palate and jaw over time.

3. Mouth Breathing

Breathing through your mouth rather than your nose changes the entire posture of your face. It causes the jaw to drop, the tongue to fall to the floor of the mouth, and the lips to stay apart. Chronic mouth breathing can severely impact dental arch development and facial growth, making it incredibly difficult for your ortho to get you that perfect result.

4. Overall Appliance or Intervention Support

When your orthodontist uses expanders, braces, or clear aligners, they are literally altering your anatomy. They are creating new space and moving your teeth into entirely new positions. But once that hard structure changes, your soft tissues—your tongue, cheeks, and lips—need to catch up and adapt to this new environment. We do the work to ensure those muscles actually support the new shape of your mouth. Think of it as protecting your hard-earned (and expensive!) orthodontic investment. If your muscles aren't retrained to support your expanded palate or straightened teeth, they can actively work to push things back to the way they were before you ever sat in the ortho chair.

What Happens If You Skip Therapy?

The short answer: Orthodontic Relapse.

You are investing a lot of time and money into getting a beautiful, healthy smile for either you or your child. If you straighten the teeth but don't fix the muscle habits that caused the teeth to be crooked in the first place, your teeth will shift right back as soon as the braces come off.

Your orthodontist knows this, which is why they sent you to Lingua! We know this because we treat kids to adults. Together your ortho and us at Lingua simply want to protect your investment. By fixing the structural issues (teeth) and the functional issues (muscles) at the same time, we ensure that your new smile lasts a lifetime.
